As New Zealand’s largest life insurer, with a history going back over 25 years, we take our responsibility to help improve the lives of Kiwis seriously – whether that be customers or our staff.
Helping Kiwis take charge
We’ve started a movement to help Kiwis take charge of their lives both by living healthily and by getting control over their financial security. Healthy by Sovereign is New Zealand’s first health programme that rewards Kiwis for their everyday health choices. Our series of Simplifying Insurance videos were produced to help demystify what life insurance is and how it works.
But it’s not just about physical wellbeing; we also provide tools to help improve mental wellbeing, including the interactive online programme Ready To Thrive which assists people in becoming more resilient at work and at home.
Supporting a worldwide community
Beyond New Zealand, we’ve developed a unique partnership with The Hunger Project, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to end world hunger by 2030. Our involvement includes a special leadership development programme that aims to learn from and support isolated communities in developing countries around the world.
Sovereign is proud to embrace the principles of the United Nations Global Compact into our business, which ensures a climate of responsible, social and ethical principles in all that we do.
We’re also committed to environmental sustainability. We achieved significant decreases in our total energy consumption, paper consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and company air travel throughout 2014-15. Our head office, Sovereign House, was the first commercial building in New Zealand to use multi-service chilled beam technology rather than conventional air conditioning, massively reducing energy consumption and providing a much healthier environment for staff.
Promoting diversity across our team
Promoting an inclusive working environment is a big part of our ethos at Sovereign. Our people have diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of skills and experiences. These unique insights and perspectives are what enable us to provide excellent service to an equally diverse customer base, and help differentiate us from other insurance companies.
Our commitment to the professional development of women in the workplace was recognised at the White Camellia Awards in 2016 and 2015, where we were upheld as a leading example of a New Zealand organisation that promotes education, training and professional development for women.
As part of our work around gender initiatives we now recognise gender Mx (used in the LGBTI community as a non-gender specific salutation) in our recruitment systems and are in the process of including gender Mx as an option for customers in our systems and forms. Globally, we are not aware of any other life insurance company taking this step.
We also became the first insurance company in New Zealand to receive the Rainbow Tick, in recognition of our successful diversity and inclusion programme, which includes a focus on sexual and gender diversity.
Proving that people truly are at the centre of everything we do, we have also been recognised as a Gold Finalist at the 2016 YWCA Equal Pay awards, as well as awarded the Work Life Balance Award at the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust Diversity Awards in 2015.
